Caring for Dentures

Dentures are removable teeth that are used when you have lost many or all of your teeth. These prosthetic teeth replace your teeth so that you can bite, chew and eat effectively, and they fill out your face and profile while preventing facial muscle sagging. Although they are not your natural teeth, you do need to take care of them just as thoroughly as if they were your natural teeth.

When you remove your dentures, brush your gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth. Plaque and food debris can accumulate in all of these areas and cause bad breath and oral irritation. Rinse after brushing. Next, brush your dentures to remove food and plaque. Use a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive cleaner to brush all the surfaces of your dentures to avoid scratching them. When you store your dentures, store them in water or a denture soaking solution to keep them from drying out and warping.

If you need to use an adhesive, use a product with the ADA Seal of Acceptance and use it exactly as recommended. Let us know as soon as possible if your dentures stop fitting well or become damaged or if they cause sores or oral irritation. They may need to be repaired, relined or adjusted.

Keeping your mouth and dentures clean and free of plaque and bacteria will keep your oral environment healthier. Call our dental office today to learn more about the best way to care for your dentures or to schedule a checkup with Dr. Rassouli.
